Places in Nepal Where Men Can’t Go: – Nepal is a country where gender remains an issue that wants to address since it involves the segregation of male and feminine within the social setting. Socially, men and girls are treated terribly and it’s been happening for ages. Therefore, there remain places and things that welcome one gender but reject the other. Men and girls have completely different status within the society and one is different than other. So, in few cases, it’s traditional even to possess segregated places for men and girls.

Places that welcome men may or may not welcome women, also there are places where ladies will go and men cannot. Given below are few of the places where solely women are allowed to travel but men don’t seem to be allowed. A number of these points are cultural, some historical and a few relating to mere social stigma. It is not against the law to go to these places or participate in these occasions for men. But it has been a custom that has been going on for hundreds of years so much so that it has become an unspoken law itself. Men do not want to participate or go to these places while women do not even expect men to be in these places or occasions.

Nunnery is a monastery that is meant for the nuns. These nuns live and pray in these nunneries according to their faith. When it comes to Buddhism, there are nunneries and similar places are there for Hindus and Christians also. This is a place where meeting with men and having any kind of proximity is strictly forbidden. These women live here renouncing every worldly thing and promise to stay unmarried all their lives being of service only to the God they believe in. In these places, men cannot visit inside the buildings and cannot interact with these nuns. So, visitation by men is strictly prohibited in such places. This makes it a place where men are not allowed inside the proximity.



2. Taking part in rituals before Bratabandha – Places in Nepal Where Men Can’t Go

Among the higher castes of Hindus in Nepal, that is Brahmins and Kshatriyas, Bratabandha is the coming of age ritual after which, boys grow up to be the men. Only after this can they take part in any kind of rituals as a priest or as a Brahmin.

So, before this age, men are prohibited from taking part in any kind of rituals like doing the last rites of their parents, performing pujas or tieing the holy thread in Janai Purnima. In these cases, men are prohibited. The Bratabandha that usually happens during the adolescence ages of boys, is when they come of age and become able to take part in every ritual.

Teej is a festival that is meant for women. In the day of Teej and before it, there is a ritual of eating good food, dancing. During this time, women who are married go to their parent’s home and enjoy. In such celebrations, men are not allowed to take part in it. Men have no work or roles to perform in such celebrations.

Also, during the day of Teej, it is women who do all the puja and fast for a whole day without even drinking water for the well being of their husbands. This ritual is also only for women. Men are not allowed to take part in it and have no roles to play. So this celebration is exclusive for women where men are not expected to take part in it anyway.

4. Rishi Panchami Rituals – Places in Nepal Where Women are Allowed to Go

The day after Teej is the Rishi Panchami Day when all the women come together to perform puja, fasting and a lot of different kinds of rituals. On this day, women wake up very early in the morning and perform rituals. These rituals are supposed to be exclusive to women. Men cannot take part in it. Neither can they be any part of this. So it is an exclusive ritual for women only. There are many customs that women have to follow on this day that is only to be observed by women. Men have no purpose in such places.

5. Ratyeuli During Marriage Ceremony – Places in Nepal Where Only Women are Allowed to Go

Rayeuli is a celebration when women in the family come together when the son in their family is getting married. During the day of marriage, when the groom and all the men in the family are gone to perform the marriage rituals and to get the girl, women in the family get together and sing songs dancing and having fun. It is a fun time where only women can participate. Men are not allowed to be there. Men have no part to play in the Ratyeuli ceremony.

Few places are so because of the cultural and religious importance while some are so because of the customs and rituals that have segregated the gender and the participation of them in such occasions.Men and girls have completely different status within the society and one is different than other. So, in few cases, it’s traditional even to possess segregated places for men and girls. These places do not impose such segregation in the level of the law. There is no fine or anything or any legal actions taken if a man goes to these places. But, it is only a matter of customs. Since such customs have been going on for hundreds of years, it has become a habit among all the people. That is why everyone wants to abide by the rules and not make any changes in it. Failing to observe these rules does decide the social standing of a person.
